Steven began a part time apprenticeship in Roanoke at the young age of 13, under the direction and guidance of his older brother, Paul, an astute flooring/carpet installer and businessman.
After completing his education, Steven immediately began full time with Paul, finishing his apprenticeship and moving to position of head installer for "Paul's Carpet Service."
Within a year, he purchased the business, built a solid reputation and expanded it to the prestigious flooring company it is today, known as Steven W. Durrance Floors.
